Why your replies end up under "Show more replies" (and how to stop it)
Reply ranking decides who gets seen in a thread. What pushes replies down, what X published about it, and five habits that keep yours visible.
On a busy post, the order of replies is everything. Readers see the first few and leave. If yours lands under "Show more replies" or in the "probable spam" section, it might as well not exist. That is reply deboosting, and it is one of the four tests FSB runs.
What decides the order
X ranks replies by predicted quality. The ranking model X published in 2023 shows how lopsided the signals are: a reply that the author engages with was weighted 75, a plain reply 13.5, a like 0.5, while negative feedback was -74 and a report -369. The current weights are not public, but the direction has not changed: conversation lifts you, negative reactions bury you. Premium subscribers also get prioritized placement in replies.
Five habits that keep replies visible
- Reply where you belong. Replies in conversations with people who know you get engagement; drive-by replies to strangers get muted.
- Add something. A question, a fact, a counterpoint. One-word replies and emoji chains look like spam to classifiers.
- Never paste the same reply twice. Identical text across threads is one of the clearest spam signals.
- Keep links out of replies to strangers. Links in unsolicited replies are a classic spam pattern.
- Slow down. Dozens of replies in an hour to different accounts looks automated even when it is not.
