Do links hurt your reach on X?
Posts with external links often reach fewer people. Why that happens, why it is not a shadowban, and how creators share links without losing reach.
Short answer: usually yes, a little, and it is ranking, not a restriction.
Why
X ranks posts by predicted engagement on X. A link invites people to leave, which X's owner has said publicly the algorithm does not favour, since it optimizes for time spent on the platform. Link posts also tend to get fewer replies and reposts, the signals that drive distribution. The result is lower reach for the same content.
It is not a shadowban
A link post that gets fewer views still appears in search, in suggestions and in threads. FSB's four tests will be clean. If they are not, the cause is something else; see how to fix a shadowban.
How creators share links without losing reach
- Post the content natively, link in a reply. Put the image, clip or key point in the post, and the link as the first reply.
- Use your profile link. One link-in-bio page in your profile, mentioned in posts, keeps posts link-free.
- Avoid shorteners. Some shortener domains are associated with spam.
- Never put links in replies to strangers. That is a spam pattern and can lead to reply deboosting.
