How to fix a shadowban on X: what actually helps

Restrictions are usually triggered by behaviour, not by one post. Stop the trigger, clean up the account and give the filters time. A step-by-step plan.

There is no button that removes a shadowban, and nobody can sell you one. Filters are applied automatically from signals, so the fix is to remove the signals and wait for the next evaluation. Most temporary restrictions we observe lift within days, not months, once the trigger stops.

Step 1: Confirm what is restricted

Run a live check. The fix depends on the restriction:

  • Search ban or suggestion ban usually points to account-level trust: spam-like activity, reports, or a sensitive-content classification.
  • Ghost ban or reply deboosting usually points to how you reply: many replies in a short time, the same text repeated, or replies to people who do not interact with you.

Step 2: Stop the likely trigger for 48–72 hours

  • Pause automation, scheduling tools and anything that posts for you.
  • Do not mass follow, unfollow, like or reply. Slow, normal activity only.
  • Stop repeating the same hashtags, links or reply text.
  • Remove links to URL shorteners or sites that may be flagged as spam.

Step 3: Clean up the account

  • Add a profile photo, banner and bio if they are missing. Empty profiles are filtered more readily.
  • Verify an email address and phone number in settings.
  • Check Settings → Privacy and safety → Your posts. If "Mark media you post as having material that may be sensitive" is on and your media is not sensitive, turn it off.
  • Revoke access for apps you no longer use under Settings → Security and account access → Apps and sessions.
  • Delete recent posts that may have been reported (heated replies, repeated promotional posts).

Step 4: Reply better

Reply deboosting hits accounts that reply a lot. X's ranking rewards replies that start real conversations: a reply that the original author answers is, according to the ranking weights X published in 2023, worth far more than a like. Replies that get muted, blocked or reported count heavily against you. Fewer, more relevant replies beat many quick ones.

Step 5: Re-check and appeal if it persists

Check again after 48–72 hours. If a restriction is still there after two weeks of normal activity, X's help center has a form to appeal account restrictions; describe what you changed. Labels on individual posts ("Visibility limited") can be appealed from the post itself.

Things that do not help

  • Deleting and re-creating the account. New accounts are filtered more, not less.
  • Paid "shadowban removal" services. They cannot change X's systems.
  • Posting about the shadowban over and over. It does not reach anyone and can look like spam.
