Guides / Posts missing from search

Why are my posts not showing up in X search?

Six reasons posts disappear from search, from a real search ban to search settings and indexing delays, and how to tell which one applies.

Posts can be missing from search for reasons that have nothing to do with a shadowban. Work through these in order.

  1. Indexing delay. Brand-new posts can take a little while to appear, especially on busy topics. Wait a few minutes and use the Latest tab.
  2. Top vs. Latest. The default Top tab only shows posts X ranks highly. Switch to Latest before concluding anything.
  3. Search filters on the viewer's side. If the person searching has "Hide sensitive content" on and your media is marked sensitive, your posts are hidden for them. Check the sensitive media flag.
  4. Protected account. Posts from protected accounts never appear in public search.
  5. The post was limited. A post with a "Visibility limited" label can be excluded from search even if the account is fine.
  6. A real search ban. If none of the above applies and even from:yourhandle returns nothing logged out, the account is search banned. Confirm with a live check and read the search ban guide.
