Ghost ban on X: replies nobody else can see

A ghost ban (thread ban) hides your replies from everyone except you. It is the most severe of the four restrictions. How to spot it and what to do.

A ghost ban, also called a thread ban or reply ban, hides your replies from the conversation for everyone else. You see your reply under the post; other people do not see it at all, not even behind "Show more replies".

It is rarer than the other restrictions and more severe, because it silently removes you from conversations. In FSB's index only a small share of checked accounts have one.

How FSB tests it

FSB looks up a recent reply from the account and checks, from a logged-out view, whether it appears in the thread it was posted to.

Causes we see most

  • Bursts of replies to many different accounts in a short time.
  • Replies that get blocked, muted or reported by the people you reply to.
  • Identical or near-identical replies.

What to do

Stop replying to strangers for a few days, then reply less and more relevantly. Follow the steps in how to fix a shadowban and re-check after 48–72 hours. If it persists for weeks, appeal through X's help center.
